How to Clean Cotton Diapers

    Dry Pail Method

    • 1). Shake the dirty diaper over the toilet to remove loose fecal content.

    • 2). Fold the diaper in half so the inside, dirty portion of the cotton is covered.

    • 3). Place the dirty cotton diaper in a diaper pail. Sprinkle baking soda in the diaper pail to reduce odor. Continue to throw all the dirty diapers into the pail until you accumulate a full washer load--about two dozen diapers.

    • 4). Launder the dirty diapers in your washing machine on the cold water setting, with no detergent, to remove fecal remnants from the cotton.

    • 5). Set your washing machine to a full-load, hot water, pre-soak cycle. Add laundry detergent according to the detergent manufacturer's directions. Medline Plus recommends using baby laundry detergent to reduce diaper rash. Leave the diapers to soak for one hour before allowing the washer to go to the wash cycle.

    • 6). Set the washing machine to do a second cold water rinse cycle to remove all traces of laundry detergent from the diapers.

    • 7). Dry the diapers on high heat in an automatic clothes dryer or hang dry on a clothing line.

    Wet Pail Method

    • 1). Rinse dirty diapers in the toilet bowl or use a diaper sprayer attachment hooked up to the toilet to spray away fecal contents.

    • 2). Place the rinsed diaper in a diaper pail filled with water and baby laundry detergent. Use the amount of detergent recommended by the laundry detergent manufacturer. Cover the diaper pail with a lid. Continue to throw all the dirty diapers into the pail until you accumulate a full washer load--about two dozen diapers.

    • 3). Pour the entire contents of the laundry pail--diapers and soapy water--into the washing machine. Set the washing machine to spin cycle to get rid of the old soapy water.

    • 4). Launder a full load of diapers with baby laundry detergent in a washing machine set to the hot water setting. Use the amount of laundry detergent recommended by the detergent manufacturer. Set the washing machine to do a second cold water rinse cycle to remove all traces of laundry detergent from the diapers.

    • 5). Dry the diapers on high heat in an automatic clothes dryer or hang dry on a clothing line.
