How to Lighten Acne Marks
- 1). Cut a raw potato into several thin slices. Place a slice onto the affected area and allow it to remain for several minutes. Rinse with cool water.
- 2). Apply an over-the-counter scar treatment to the affected area daily. Lotions or ointments, such as Mederma, are made from onion extract and will help gradually lighten the appearance of scarring.
- 3). Soak a cotton swab in cucumber or lemon juice and apply the juice to the affected area. Allow the juice to remain for 15 minutes and wash it away with warm water.
- 4). Apply the mash from one pureed apple or pineapple to the affected area with a cotton swab. Allow the mash to remain for 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Both of these products contain ascorbic acid, which will exfoliate the skin and diminish the presence of old acne marks.
- 5). Apply a gel that contains 5 percent tea tree oil to the affected area daily. The tea tree oil will help prevent future breakouts and will reduce the appearance of both old and new scars.
- 1). Speak to a dermatologist about tissue fillers. During this process, collagen or fat is injected under the skin and into the scar tissue. The fillers stretch the skin, making the acne scars less noticeable, according to the Mayo Clinic.
- 2). Inquire about dermabrasion. During this procedure, a dermatologist removes the top layers of skin on and around the affected area with a wire brush. The brush will remove more superficial scars and will help reduce the appearance of deeper acne marks.
- 3). Ask the dermatologist about laser treatments that can be used to lessen the appearance of acne marks. These treatments, such as laser resurfacing, heat the skin and promote new skin growth over the existing acne scars, making them less visible.
