How to Prepare Sunday School Kids for a New School Year

    • 1). Consider holding Vacation Bible School a few weeks before the regular Sunday School year begins. This will give the children a full week to settle in with their classmates, catch up with their friends and learn the expectations of their teachers. When possible, ask the teachers who will be leading Sunday School to also teach the same grade level for Vacation Bible School, so the children get to know the teacher.

    • 2). Talk to your pastor about offering a children's program during the church service in the weeks leading up to the Sunday School year. This is a good time to find small activities for the children that will help them ease into the routine of learning before they are in a full classroom. It is possible to offer a program like this for no cost if you utilize Internet resources for lesson and activity plans.

    • 3). Host a kick-off celebration the week before Sunday School begins. This will give the children an opportunity to meet their teachers and learn about the lessons that will be taught throughout the year. It is also a good time to reach out to the community and invite them to learn more about your Sunday School program.

    • 4). Spend time during the first week of Sunday School explaining the structure that will be followed and the rules of the classroom. Children are much more successful when there are clear expectations of them and when they feel they know what is going on. This will shorten the adjustment time and allow for orderly instruction.
