How to Fix a USB in Windows 7

    • 1). Click on the "Start" menu and then click "Run." Type "Devmgmt.msc" into the open box and then press "OK" to open Device Manager.

    • 2). Right-click on the computer and click "Scan."

    • 3). Press the expand button on the top-right corner to expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers." A window will pop up that lists the USB ports on your computer. It will reveal which ones are working properly and which ones are not recognized.

    • 4). Right-click on the USB drive that isn't recognized or not working properly, and select "Power Management." Click on the box -- clearing the check mark next to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

    • 5). Click "OK."

    • 6). Click "Scan." Windows will scan your computer again, scanning for changes or other system issues. During this process, it will fix the USB that isn't recognized or working properly.

    • 7). Restart your computer.
