How to Repair Settling Stucco
- 1). Remove the loose or cracked stucco with a hammer and chisel. Take care not to damage the intact stucco. Use a stiff putty knife to remove any loose, small pieces.
- 2). Clean the area with a wire brush until you have a smooth surface.
- 3). Vacuum any loose stucco dust that may remain in the area.
- 4). Mix the mortar and water in a bucket according to the manufacturer's directions. You want to achieve the consistency of peanut butter.
- 5). Spray the cleaned area with water to dampen the wall and to help prevent the stucco from cracking while drying.
- 6). Use a trowel to apply a layer of stucco to the wall about 3/8 inch thick. Use the tip of your trowel to create a crosshatch pattern in the wet stucco; this will help the next layer to adhere correctly. Allow this layer to dry for 48 hours.
- 7). Mix another batch of mortar and water in a bucket according to the manufacturer's directions, again creating the consistency of peanut butter.
- 8). Spray the crosshatched layer to dampen the stucco. Spray the float and use it to apply the mixed mortar. Mimic the texture of your existing stucco by pulling or swirling the mortar as you apply it. Allow to dry for 48 hours.
- 9). Use a roller and matching exterior paint to cover your stucco repair.
