A Comprehensive Understanding of Heartburn Remedies

What is heartburn? Heartburn is a digestive ailment that happens when stomach acid comes in contact with the lining of the esophagus.
Heartburn home remedies often include taking an over-the-counter antacid such as Tums or Rolaids.
You can also take over-the-counter versions of stronger prescription medications such as Prevacid and Tagamet.
These can be taken as often as every six hours, and at least one should be taken before bedtime if you are suffering from frequent heartburn.
Speaking of bedtime, another way to sooth heartburn is to elevate the head of your bed.

You can also get relief from heartburn by eating soothing foods such as a few blanched almonds, brown rice (plain or with a little sugar or honey), or unsalted soda crackers.
Another way to relieve acid reflux is to drink warm milk with honey.
A tablespoon or so of either white vinegar or apple cider vinegar also appears to be a great form of heartburn relief for most people.
Also included in home remedies for heartburn is baking soda and water; the main complaint with this is that while it does work effectively it doesn't taste very good.
You can also combine cream of tartar with baking soda and water; it still doesn't taste too good but it is one of the most successful heartburn remedies.
Other acid reflux remedies include eating apples (skin on or off) because they cool down the pain.
They can also be cooked in desserts, or made into apple honey.
There are several spices that are known to provide acid reflux relief including cardamom, ginger, sage, and cinnamon.
Cardamom can be added to baked goods such as sweet rolls or fruit cake, or combined with cinnamon and then sprinkled on toast.
Ginger ale is a well known heartburn reliever, and you can also make ginger tea.
Simmer ginger root in water for 10 minutes, and drink as needed.
Cinnamon tea or cinnamon toast is another good home remedy for heartburn, but check your cinnamon first, as commercial cinnamon sometimes is made with black tea.
Black tea can cause heartburn.
Other heartburn remedies include trying to avoid stress, not drinking with meals, taking non-aspirin painkillers, and waiting several hours after eating to sleep (it takes 2-3 hours for the stomach to fully empty after a meal).
Few other heartburn remedies are: If you smoke, stop, and if you don't smoke, don't start.
Nicotine exasperates the valve that lies between the esophagus stomach and stomach (as well as the stomach lining) which is why smokers get more heartburn.
One of the simplest heartburn remedies is simply remembering to chew your food thoroughly before swallowing it.
Sometimes heartburn is caused when a large piece of food is forced back up because it's too large to get through the digestive tract.
