Gleanings from Genesis
Gleanings from Genesis One
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth without form (shape) and void. (empty) (Gen. 1:1-2)
Yet the prophet stated clearly:
"For thus says the LORD who created the heavens... who formed the earth and made it...Who did not create it in vain (empty)" (Isa. 45:18)
What happened? Some scholars believe that the earth was created perfect and light was everywhere. There was neither darkness nor shadows anywhere. The Bible reveals:
"For God is light in Him is no darkness at all." (1 John 1:5)
Something happened to the whole universe. What? Some scholars believe that sometime in the distant past Lucifer, the highest arch angel, rebelled against God. God then cast him out of heaven.
How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning? For you have said in your heart:
(1) I will ascend into heaven
(2) I will exalt my throne above the stars of God
(3) I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the North
(4) I will be like the Most High (Isa. 14:12-14)
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit (Isa. 14:15)
You, (Lucifer), were in Eden, the Garden of God...You were the anointed cherub who covers. I established you.
You were on the holy mountain of God...You were perfect in all your ways, from the day you were created till iniquity was found in you...Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty. You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground. (Ezek. 28: 13-17)
Thus the highest archangel became Satan- or the Devil. Also it was at that time some of the angels followed Lucifer. These fallen angels are the evil spirits today- they possess some unbelievers, and they may harass believers.
The question----Why did God curse the earth instead of some other p
God's Word answers. "Thus says the LORD (YAWH): Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool" (Isa. 66:1)
Note: God used an anthromorphism:
In ancient times, when a king sat upon his throne, his personal body guard stood before him, beside his footstool. That position was the guard's "domain". Since Lucifer stood beside God's footstool and the earth is God's footstool, it would seem that the earth was Lucifer's "domain".
When God cursed Lucifer, He cursed Lucifer's domain, namely the earth.
"The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep" (Gen. 1:2)
One thing God did in the past was to bring darkness upon the earth for an undetermined length of time. Thus when revealing to us -in Genesis- the six days of creation, God begins the story by describing the whole earth as enveloped in darkness, and inundated with water.
