How to Make Watercolor Paint Sheets

    • 1). Cut the watercolor paper into the desired size pieces. You can leave paper in large, standard size sheets for complete pictures, or cut it into smaller squares for paint sheets that will feature just one subject. Smaller paint sheets can serve as a start to handmade greeting cards or creative note paper.

    • 2). Sketch an outline of the paint sheet onto a piece of sketch paper using a pencil. Create an entire scene, a large shape, letters, an animal or any other item that features open spaces that can be filled in with watercolor. Involve children by allowing them to sketch their own paint sheet outlines. Although you could draw directly on the watercolor paper, using a piece of sketch paper and outlining the design reduces the risk of eraser residue and partially erased lines on the final watercolor paint sheet.

    • 3). Tape the completed sketch onto a clean, dry window with light shining through it. Place the watercolor paper on top of the sketch paper and hold it in place with your hand. Press firmly so that the outline on the sketch paper shows through the watercolor paper.

    • 4). Trace the image from the sketch paper onto the watercolor paper using a black pen, or if you do not want the outlines to show up through the watercolor paints, use a pencil and press lightly. Remove the paper from the window and begin painting your new watercolor paint sheet.
