A Simple Practice

So the story goes... feeling a need like a deep seated sentience that couldn't be grasped, the chase was long and sometimes exhausting, floundering was always the first choice. Nothing satisfied the craving, reading, listening and understanding. It all made sense, but nothing stood out as a pathway, what was this need for a light to guide, a key to the gate?

The "I" inside me just gave up and sighed...or was it "I". There was something, at the end of a sigh, a moment of relaxation, a stillness that just is.

So that's the practice, (No not sighing, although a sigh used correctly can be a gateway) to simply rest as the spacious awareness as often as possible. It is an openness that is available at all times. Just pause thinking for one moment and that openness is offered, it is always there.

In these moments of resting, don't look for outcomes or attainment. Don't look for some amazing awakening, just rest for the sake of it. If a thought pops up, simply notice it and allow it to fade. Maybe inquire! Does it take a thought to just be? If not, rest as that. Nothing takes away the simple presence of being. It is always here, always available, whether there is thinking or no thinking. Just rest and notice that every thought comes and goes within this space, some call awareness.

This is not a meditation as such, not mindfulness, just resting, taking a moment, resting without labelling what is happening, gently allowing all thoughts about me, others, work and worldly troubles to come to rest, just resting in and as that present moment.

This is our true identity, here all thoughts, emotions, and experiences are seen but they don't have the power to harm or torment. Resting in this space it's possible to remain untouched by these movements. Yet all movements are seen to arise spontaneously, involuntarily, within this space. No pushing away. No pursuing. All just is.

To welcome the mind playing games is a joy "I'm not there yet." He says, but it's false, the thought arises and then floats away, as it fades the realisation dawns that I'm already here, but only for a moment, the next who knows.

Don't think of this resting practice to reach enlightenment or some point of awakening in time. Each moment of rest is an end in and of itself. In these moments of rest, time is seen to be thought.

In a moment of resting, don't look for results or achievement. Don't look for some grand awakening experience, just rest for rest's sake. Simply rest as what you are. If a thought arises, simply notice it and allow it to pass. Ask yourself, does it take a thought to just be? If not, rest as that thought-free awareness. And when a thought arises, ask, "Does this thought take away being?" Nothing takes away the simple presence of being. It is always here, always available, whether there is thinking or no thinking. Just notice that every thought comes and goes within this restful awareness.

It is possible that it may instantly dawn on you that your real identity is this space we are resting in.

Or one day you find yourself unable to rest as spacious awareness anymore!

How can you rest as what you already are and what you've always been?

Resting as awareness is a simple practice and a great addition to your daily meditation practice.
