Born in Ebersheim, Alsace, his trade was cobbler. His religion, Catholic. After his father's death he immigrated to the United States from Germany. He first settled in the fishing community of Jamestown, Long Island. He was employed as a fireman on a fishing steamer for a short while, but eventually took up shoe making again. Schlatter later moved to Denver, Colorado where his healing ministry began. He later took a walking trek to Cheyenne Wyoming which took over seven hundred days before returning back to Denver. Traveling through desert regions he was often viewed as a vagrant and would sometimes have run-ins with the law. Schlatter revealed upon his return that during his wanderings he had spiritual experiences (fasting, tempted by evil, visions, and communications with Father God). Last seen in January 1896 there remains a mystery as to the actual date and place of his death.
