What Causes Sagging Skin?

If you were wondering what causes sagging skin, you probably have seen it on your own body.
Sagging skin may be caused by sudden weight loss or aging.
When it occurs as a result of weight loss, most people are not too upset about it.
If they are young, the skin's natural elasticity will eventually catch up and tighten up.
The skin's natural elasticity is not completely lost as we age.
But, it does become less firm.
There are three reasons why this occurs.
First Reason- -is decreased production of new collagen and elastin fibers.
They are sometimes simply referred to as elastic fibers.
They are partially responsible for the skin's strength and firmness.
Throughout your life, the elastic fibers degrade and deteriorate.
As this happens, the body makes new ones.
It is part of the skin's natural rejuvenation process.
It simply slows down as the years go by.
Second Reason- -cause of lost elasticity is low levels of hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a glue-like substance that helps to hold the skin's cells together.
As we get older, the amount of hyaluronic acid among the skins cells starts to decline as a result of enzymatic activity.
Third Reason- -that naturally accompanies the aging process; decreased production of new cells.
An enzyme called hyaluronidaise breaks down the skin's hyaluronic acid.
Sometimes that's what causes sagging skin.
But, it is usually not the only factor involved.
It is the three things combined (decreased skin cell product, decreased production of elastic fibers and low levels of hyaluronic acid) that result in sagging skin caused by aging.
There are some other contributing factors that can occur at any age.
More Reasons Skin Sags If the skin's moisture content is low, the outer layers will start to sag.
If there is inflammation (especially the chronic kind), it can degrade the collagen fibers faster than they can be replaced.
If there is not enough vitamin C in your diet, the collagen fibers that are produced will be weaker than normal.
Vitamin C is a necessary co-factor for the production of strong collagen fibers.
If there is not enough protein in your diet, your body does not have the building blocks necessary to create new elastic fibers or new skin cells.
All of the cells of the body are composed of the amino acids present in dietary protein.
So, excessive dryness and inflammation or irritation could be what causes sagging skin at any age.
Overexposure to the sun can cause excessive dryness and is sometimes the underlying cause of a prematurely aged appearance.
Wind damage could be involved, too.
The use of harsh cleansers and other "bad" skincare products can cause excessive dryness, inflammation and premature aging.
Eating the wrong foods could even be involved.
In other words, there are many, many things that could be the underlying cause.
We all know what it looks like.
If you are like most people, you would probably like to know how to get rid of it.
In the next article, How to Remove Sagging Skin, you will learn how to do that.
