How to Make a Weather Stick

- 1). Find a dead balsam fir tree about 6- to 8-feet tall. The height of the tree is important because it will ensure the diameter of the trunk is thick enough for the weather stick.
- 2). Pick a branch on the tree that is about 2- to 3-feet long.
- 3). Cut the branch from the tree with your handsaw. Completely cut through the tree trunk on both sides of the branch so that a 4- to 5-inch sliver of the trunk remains attached to the branch. This branch and piece of trunk is your weather stick.
- 4). Nail the trunk of your weather stick to a vertical surface. Make sure not to have anything above or below your weather stick that might obstruct it from bending from humidity.
