• Appleton, Minnesota is known as the Home of Honored Veterans. All of the streets in the town of 2,700 residents were renamed to honor those who have died in a war. It is the only town in the United States whose streets and avenues are named after fallen veterans. • The Picket Fence Motel in Dawson is about 25 minutes from Appleton. The motel is directly across from the Municipal Park and a swimming pool, and within walking distance from a variety of restaurants. Pets are welcomed here, with an area for walking and playing attached to the main building. Guests wanting to go bird watching, hunting or fishing can head over to the Lac Qui Parle Reservoir and Salt Lake Marsh, both within a few minutes' drive of the motel. Benson Inn

• The Benson Inn, less than 30 minutes from Appleton in the town of Benson, is close to hiking, fishing, swimming and other outdoor activities. It is right next to Lake Hassel, where guests can go boating or fishing. Nearby Glacial Lakes State Park has a golf course, swimming pool and bike paths. Sibley State Park, Prairie's Edge Casino and the Stevens County Fairgrounds are all within a 20 minute drive. While the Benson Inn does not allow pets, it does have parking for RVs and boats.
