Fishbones has three locations in the Metro Detroit area. In addition to the Southfield location, there are restaurants in Detroit’s Greektown and St. Clair Shores.
Pros:
- Entertaining Atmosphere
- Good with kids
- Unique dishes
Cons:
- Overwhelming menu
- Chain
Atmosphere
The restaurant aims for the feel of the French Quarter in New Orleans, right down to the wrought-iron railings, French doors, palmettos, bulbous light fixtures and complementary Mardi Gras beads.
There are two levels in the dining room that surround a sunken bar with tile-inlayed floors. The restaurant has wooden tables and booths. It also has an outside patio, complete with canopy and colored lights reminiscent of Mardi Gras, in the warmer months.
Food
The inclusion of sushi, burgers and saganaki on the otherwise Creole-inspired menu is a bit of a distraction, but the Po’ Boy sandwiches, Alligator Voodoo and Crawfish Etouffee complete the illusion of a New Orleans cafe.
The Seafood Gumbo is everything you’d expect as a signature dish. It was spicy, flavorful and full of large shrimp and chucks of crabmeat. The beef in the Beef Tips Blue appetizer was lean, served upon a heap of diced vegetables and piping hot, if not particular memorable. The Pasta Orleans with Vegetables was served in a large portion, sprinkled liberally with vegetables, but ultimately buttery and a little bland in terms of spice. The Bananas Foster Sundae included a large portion of ice cream and lots of sliced bananas, but seemed light on the liquor.
The real surprise was the fish and chips on the kids menu that included three, large pieces of fish and a boat-load of French fries. The breading on the fish was tempura-like in its lightness, and each piece of fish was large and flaky. The dish was a great value.
Service
Prompt and courteous.
