Pictou, Nova Scotia overlooks the busy entrance of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The area was first settled by Scottish immigrants that landed there in 1773. Over the centuries immigrants from other cultures arrived, among them the Irish, English and the French Acadians. Motels and inns in this area, some 102 miles north of Halifax, retain much of that old-world charm. - A 100-year-old carved stone lion welcomes you to the Lionstone Inn Motel and Cottages. The property offers 14 guest rooms in a single-story motel that is open year round, and 13 guest cottages that are available during the summer months. If you are heading to Prince Edward Island, this is the closest motel to the ferry terminal. This economy property is in a rural setting, yet is less than a half mile from the Pictou town center. Nearby restaurants include Tim Horton's and KFC--they are within a 2-block radius of the motel. The China Boat and Acropole Pizza are about five blocks away. Some guest rooms and cottages have kitchenettes or full kitchens and the entire property offers wireless Internet access.

Yes, there is a sign, equally rustic, but the anchor is a nice touch. This is your basic economy hotel, offering 15 rooms in a single-story building. Four rooms offer kitchenettes, and all have wireless Internet access. Rooms are simply furnished but with nice touches like framed artwork and brass lamps that look vaguely nautical. Historic downtown Pictou and the waterfront are four blocks away.

The circa-1938 property sits on five manicured acres and has the feel of an English manor home. When Princess Anne visited the inn in 1991, she most likely felt right at home. Most of the rooms and suites overlook the harbor. Two-room Junior suites include in-room jetted tubs. All rooms include wireless Internet access and continental breakfast. The on-site dining room is open in the evenings during the high season, from the middle of May until the middle of October. The marina and downtown Pictou are only four blocks away.

This property is a bit of a splurge, but it does give you the chance to stay in a vintage 1870 sandstone and red brick building and soak up the ambience of an earlier age. Period furnishings and high ceilings are combined with modern niceties such as wireless Internet and in-room jetted tubs. The Old Stone Pub is a local haunt, and though it does get busy, inn guests have the use of their own private dining room. The Customs House Inn is open all year.
