The Calgary Stampede is billed as "the greatest outdoor show on earth". It runs for 10 days in July, usually starting in the second week. Along with the many events and exhibitions, it boasts the largest rodeo in the world, 35 midway rides, evening shows and concerts. Following a few helpful tips will maximize enjoyment and minimize costs. - July weather in Calgary, though not extreme, requires a little planning. The days are hot and the nights cool, with an average high of 73 F and low of 48 F. So, if you plan to be out for the entire day, take a jacket with you for the evenings.
With a daily average of nine hours of sunshine in the summer, a day of outdoor events can mean a serious sunburn. So bring sunscreen, hats and long-sleeved shirts. Calgary is dry by most standards, averaging only 2.6 inches of rainfall in the month. This lack of humidity keeps mosquitoes away, which is an added bonus when spending so much time outdoors. - The combination of traveling as a family and the millions of people the Stampede attracts can make getting tickets for the rides not only expensive, but frustrating. To ease the pain of standing in lines and paying full price, Safeway supermarkets in southern Alberta offer all-day ride cards or coupon booklets at a 25 percent savings. These can be used on all rides, but only on weekdays. Costco also offers discounted park admission, rodeo and evening show tickets.
- The Stampede, like any large event, can be very expensive. Take advantage of the bargains and freebies available. Free pancake breakfasts are offered everyday at various locations around the city. High food prices in the park grounds can be avoided by packing lunch and snacks. There are special days when children under 12 (and accompanying parents), families and seniors enter for free before certain hours.
- First-time visitors should not miss the opportunity to see the natural beauty for which Canada is famous. Banff is only an hour away and offers a wide array of attractions. Climb the Canadian Rockies in the Banff Gondola to look out over Banff National Park or hike the numerous trails around the town. Journey a little farther to visit the emerald-colored glacial waters of Lake Louise or a Grizzly Bear refuge.
If looking for something more relaxing, shoot a round of golf or visit the spa in the luxurious Banff Springs Hotel.
