Houston Calendar of Events September

Big Easy: James Reese Band
Gotta love whenever you get a chance to make it over to one of the best blues joints in the city. If you’ve never been, you really are missing out on a Houston nightlife institution.

Minute Maid Park: Houston Astros Batting Practice
Perhaps the hometown heroes will be more effective without an actual opponent.
Bad-dum-bum. But for real, if you’ve got a kiddo at home, I believe it might be mandatory that you take him or her to at least one Astros batting practice before they turn 13.

Miller Outdoor Theater: Swing, Jive & Pop! Into Dance
Second time Miller Outdoor makes the list this month. Swing, Jive and Pop yourself into their family friendly dance class. Free. Starts at 11 a.m. On a personal note, have you ever seen a two-year-old dance? It’s the best thing in the world.

Thursday, September 24
Woodlands Center: Blink 182 in Concert
See Blink 182 (they’re still around?) with Fallout Boy and All American Rejects at the Woodlands Pavilion (how uncool am I that I can’t name one song either of those last two bands sing). Show starts around 8 p.m. Tickets available at the link below.

Contemporary Arts Museum: Artists Engage Houston
Bam: “Free from the land-use and zoning ordinances that shape other large American cities by separating residential, commercial, and industrial areas, Houston allows a mixed-use approach where disparate architectures and functions blend. In this often chaotic, jarring urban topography, many Houston artists have been able to carve out spaces and opportunities for themselves.” Not sure exactly what that means, but I know it’s going to be cool.

Rice Stadium: Rice Owls vs. Vanderbilt
For some reason, I find myself at a Rice sporting event at least twice a year even though I have absolutely no connection to the campus. Does that happen to anyone else?
Rice Owls
Stadium Road (University @ Greenbriar)

Sunday, September 27
Stages Theatre: Southern Rapture
This is actually one of those true stories about one’s self that you need to know the background of to get the full effect. You can learn all about it at the link below. But even if you don’t feel like learning (completely understandable), just know that the play will be mostly smart funny, which is never bad. Tickets range from $26 to $36. Show times vary based on date.

Museum of Natural Science: Terra Cotta Warriors
This was nominated a top 5 “must see” exhibition by Time magazine. And it’s at one of the best museums in Houston. Definitely make your way out here.
Museum of Natural Science 1 Hermann Circle Dr.

Tuesday, September 29
Alamo Drafthouse: Anime at the Alamo
The regular Tuesday night Anime at the Alamo event is (probably) aimed at those who have a fondness for cartoons and beer and food. Winner, winner. Get there early. It’s free and it can fill up quick.

Wednesday, September 30
Menil Collection: Body in Fragments
This exhibition isn’t nearly as Hannibal Lecter-y as it sounds. It’s mostly pictures and whatnot of things body-related. Very post modern.
