Many homeowners decide to invest in their own home by taking care of needed repairs and renovations instead of selling the house and buying a new home. Renovations also should include the home's exterior and grounds. Installing high-quality fencing around the yard can add considerably to the attractiveness of the home and to its value. - Many homeowners prefer wooden fencing for their yard. Types of wooden fencing include wood panel, picket and ranch-style; these fences give a property an aura of elegance and Old-World simplicity. Installing a wooden fence requires wooden posts, pre-cut wooden slats and wooden rails. If you purchase pre-cut materials, you can install the fencing with basic carpentry tools after setting the posts in cement. Stringers, horizontal posts which stretch from post to post along the top and bottom of the fence, fit into grooves that have been cut into the posts. Nail the wooden slats of the fence to the stringers. You must paint, stain or varnish wooden fencing to preserve the wood, and the wood will need repainting, revarnishing or restaining every few years.
- Many people prefer chain-link fencing because it's a weather-resistant fencing option that needs little upkeep. Additionally, chain-link fences allow people to see in and out of the yard and give the yard a feeling of openness while providing a safe, enclosed area for animals and children. Hardware stores and home centers sell chain-link construction materials, which include the metal posts, the stringers, rolls of chain-link fencing and the metal ties to tie the fencing to the posts. You will appreciate the ease of detaching different portions of the fence by unhooking the links.
- Choose a wire mesh fence if you need to fence in an area for small animals. Although you probably would not choose to fence in an entire yard with wire mesh fencing because of its flimsier construction, you can erect a wire mesh fence simply and inexpensively and may opt to use it on a temporary basis. In addition to the wire mesh, stringers and posts, you need wire ties and a wire cutter. If small animals will live within the enclosure, fold the bottom of the wire mesh inward at the bottom and place bricks on the fold to ensure that the animals don't slip under the fence.
