Mike Huckabee on Religion, Secularism, Church/State Separation, Atheism

Mike Huckabee on the Christian Culture War Against Modernity, Enlightenment

America's Christian Right is defined largely by the "culture war" they want to wage against modernity: secularism, science, reproductive rights, and the Enlightenment generally. Mike Huckabee is an enthusiastic supporter of this culture war, arguing that any and all problems with America can be attributed to the groups and ideas which he most dislikes. One of the worst aspects of this attitude is how some Christians latch on to any tragedy to promote their theocratic vision. Mike Huckabee is certainly no exception to this, arguing that only his religion and his god can cure whatever ails America.More »

Mike Huckabee on Religious Conflict and Terrorism

The conflict between the modern, secular West and Islamic extremism will last some time and have significant effects on both the West and Islam. There are many different perspectives on it, but Mike Huckabee pushes the story used by the far Christian Right: "If you're with Jesus Christ, we know how it turns out in the final moment. I've read the last chapter in the book, and we do end up winning." Conflict with Islam is, for such Christians, a part of the End Timed predicted in the Bible where devout Christians will battle the forces of Satan. Islam is the part of satanic, evil forces and conflict with Islam must be pursued, not avoided. Compromise is not only not possible, but itself evil.

Mike Huckabee on Science & Evolution

Although he appear willing to allow schools to teach evolution, he himself doesn't accept it; during the May 3, 2007 GOP debate, Huckabee, Brownback, and Tancredo all raised their hands to indicate they didn't believe evolution. During the June 3, 2007 GOP debate he said: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth. To me it's pretty simple, a person either believes that God created this process or believes that it was an accident and that it just happened all on its own. I believe there is a God who was active in the creation process." Huckabee doesn't say whether he is an Old or Young Earth Creationist, but he does say that his denial of basic science shouldn't be relevant to whether he is qualified for the presidency.

Mike Huckabee on Women's Equality

In 1998, Mike Huckabee joined 130 Southern Baptists who signed a USA Today advertisement calling on wives to submit themselves graciously to the servant leadership of their husbands — a standard part of Southern Baptist theology. The ideal of women who are subordinate and subservient to men is what such Christians consider "family values" and "traditional marriage." Many facets of their "culture wars" against modernity are directed specifically at women and the ways in which they have achieved liberty, equality, and autonomy. The traditional families and society which Christian Nationalists seek is one in which women are relegated to second-class status.

Mike Huckabee on Equality for Gays: Huckabee Opposes Gay Rights, Marriage

Mike Huckabee is a staunch opponent of equality for gays, especially when it comes to marriage rights. According to Mike Huckabee, "I support and have always supported passage of a federal constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. As President, I will fight for passage of this amendment. My personal belief is that marriage is between one man and one woman, for life." Mike Huckabee's idea for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage doesn't just define marriage as between "one man and one woman," but also as being "for life." Depending on the wording, this would eliminate divorce — and no-fault divorce has been one of the targets for the Christian Right for decades.More »

Mike Huckabee on Reproductive Rights & Abortion

Like other Republicans, Mike Huckabee opposes legal choices on a variety of issues involving reproductive rights, including abortion, emergency contraception, and comprehensive sex education. He would seek to have the 1973 decision Roe v. Wade overturned in order to ensure that abortion is criminalized, and while it's unclear if he would have the same done with contraception generally he would certainly do it with emergency contraception. Mike Huckabee's policies would increase demand for abortion through greater ignorance of sexuality and contraception, but then make abortion harder to obtain — and perhaps more dangerous. The point is to punish women who have sex through sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, and botched abortions.More »
