How to Calculate Hurricane Shutters
- 1). Measure a window's length with a tape measure. Measure from the outside of each side of the casing or the interior portion of sunken windows.
- 2). Measure a window's height with a tape measure.
- 3). Repeat the measurement for all windows on which you will install hurricane shutters. Don't assume that all your windows are the same size or you could miscalculate the shutters you'll need.
- 4). Take the actual measurements with you to the store, and consult a professional for the style of shutter that works best for your location. Depending upon the style of shutter you choose, you may need to add some height or width. For example, roll up shutters need an additional 8 and 12 inches of extra length.
- 5). Multiply each window's length by the width to determine area for each window. Sum all figures to obtain the total square feet of shutters you'll need. Some companies sell shutters by the square foot and some sell shutters by the individual piece, depending upon the style you choose. Order the correct size and number of hurricane shutters based upon your needs and shutter preferences.
