Refinished Basement Design Ideas

    Child's Room

    • With children in a home, it can sometimes be difficult to find a place for their toys, games, equipment and visiting friends. Consider making your basement a child-friendly center for fun and games.

Equip the basement with furniture that accommodates your child and his interests. Younger children may benefit from toy storage and containers, play mats for the floors, and television and video equipment for watching movies or shows.

Older children and teenagers may be more interested in electronic equipment, such as video game systems. If your child is interested in music, make the basement his practice space.

Accommodate as many of the child's needs as you can. Perhaps one corner allows your child to relax and watch television while the other has space for him to practice his martial arts. If you have multiple children, divide the space evenly among them or accommodate their similar tastes.

For younger children, be sure that they know that basements can include dangerous equipment, such as water heaters and washing machines.

    Party Center

    • If you want to use your basement to cater to your friends and adult crowds, install a variety of entertainment options for older guests.

Install a small bar in the basement stocked with your friends' favorite drinks. Include small bar snacks like chips and pretzels for added convenience.

Provide entertainment options like a pool table, home theater or air hockey table. If you enjoy a good card game with friends, add a poker table. The basement can become a retreat for adult guests to keep alcohol and gambling away from any children of the household.

    Home Office

    • If you are looking for a more quiet retreat, the basement may the ideal location for a home office.

Adorn the room with a desk, filing cabinets, a computer and other office-related equipment. If you run your own business, you may need a fax machine or telephone as well.

A home office can be an ideal space for career work or for studying. Having this located in the basement and away from commonly lived in areas can protect your equipment from accidental spills or interference from children or guests.
