Do it Yourself Sewing Cabinet
- 1). Make a list of everything you want to go in your sewing cabinet. This will help you create a sewing cabinet large enough for your materials.
- 2). Measure the height and width of your sewing machine. Add at least 4 inches to each measurement. The top of your sewing cabinet or the shelf where you plan to place your sewing machine must exceed or meet these measurements.
- 3). Cut four boards 28-inches long with a width that meets your width figure from a 4-by-8 sheet of 3/4-inch plywood. Cut four more pieces which meet both the length and width figures for the top surface of the cabinet. Cut one 28-inch long piece with a width that matches the length of the surface pieces.
- 4). Glue the surface of each of the 28-inch long boards to another board of the same size with wood glue to double up the boards. Repeat the process with the other four boards which measure the surface of the cabinet. You should now have four doubled-up boards. Let the glue dry completely.
- 5). Create a corner with one of the 28-inch long boards and one of the surface pieces. Apply a bead of glue along the edge of one of the boards where it will fit against the other. Use a carpenter's square to make sure the corner is squared correctly. The pieces should fit flush against each other. Clamp the pieces together. Drill a series of equidistant holes, starting at one end of the corner, through the first board into the second. Make a hole about every 4 inches. Place a screw in each hole. Screw the boards together. Repeat the process with the other two boards.
- 6). Fit the two corners together to create a box. Use the same method you used to construct the first two corners to finish off the final two corners of your box.
- 7). Apply a bead of glue around the edge of the rectangular frame you've created. Place the final piece of wood you cut on the back of your square frame to create a box. Drill holes approximately every 6 inches through the back piece into the box frame, all along the edge. Place screws in the holes. Screw the back to the box.
- 8). Rip and add shelves as desired inside your box. Screw the shelves into the box frame in the same manner you constructed the corners if you want permanent shelves. Use brackets to create adjustable shelves.
- 9). Measure the front of your cabinet. Cut a door piece based on the measurements, if desired. Attach the door to the front of the cabinet with hinges.

Fill any screw holes, cracks or dips with paintable or stainable wood filler and let it dry. Sand the wood filler smooth with 200- to 250-grit sandpaper. - 11
Paint or stain your sewing cabinet, if desired.
