Things to Do in Banja Luka, Bosnia-Herzegovina

    • Banja Luka lies along the Vrbas River in Northern Bosnia and serves as the capital of the Bosnian Serb Republic. It is the second largest city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Banja Luka has had a difficult history filled with wars and political turmoil but the city remains a gem that attracts many visitors each year. Banja Luka offers visitors several attractions and activities including beautiful panoramic views, architecture and rafting.

    Kastel

    • The Kastel, located in the middle of the city, is one of the most striking, historically-important sights in Banja Luka. The structure is poorly maintained but impresses with its high walls and towers. The Romans built the structure as a fortress to protect roads and waterways. The Ottomans later refortified and added to the building when they held power over the area. As of 2010, the areas often hosts outdoor concerts and serves as a quiet retreat from the busy city.

    Banski Dvor

    • Banski Dvor is located in downtown Banka Luka. The 1932 buildings originially housed government office and several local rulers including the governor, or "ban" of the Vrbas Banovina province. It sufered severe damage during World War II when it was a political and military headquarters. It became the city's cultural center in 1955 and a public institution. The halls accommodate different types of performances, exhibitions and lectures.

    Monasteries

    • Banja Luka is home to two monasteries. The Orthodox Sanctuary of Christ, built between 1925 and 1929, houses golden domes and a very colorful exterior. Destroyed during World War II, the church rebuilt in 2004 using the the same volcanic rock as the original from Mesopotamia.

      The Franciscan Monastery of Marija Zvijezda is located three miles from the city center. This monastery has several paintings and valuable books for tourists to look at while visiting. In addition, the church is brightly painted and staff produce a regionally famous white cheese.

    Museums

    • The Museum of Contemporary Art exhibits both work from local artists and artists from around the world. The Museum provides several interactive activities including oversized chessboards in the park just in front of the museum. Admission is free.

      The museum of the Republic of Srpska is a historically oriented facility. It houses several artifacts and exhibits focusing on the history of region including archeological findings, war artifacts and conflict descriptions and weapons.

    Vrbas

    • In addition to the scenic views, many tourists can enjoy the Vrbas River as kayakers or white water rafters. The Vrbas River has fast waters and canyon views. The average water temperature is around 51 degrees Fahrenheit year round, though gets up to 63 F in the summer, making this a year round activity. Banja Luka has hosted the World Rafting Competition and numerous other European rafting competitions.

    Food Markets

    • Banja Luka is home to two main food markets, which attract many visitors. Trznica is the main city market where visitors can purchase local produce such as meat, poultry, baked goods, fruit and vegetables. There are also several clothing, shoes and accessories vendors. The upper level of the market hosts a restaurant for hungry shoppers to rest and refresh. Nova Pijaca is the largest market in the city. Vendors sell food, clothes and animal stock. It is only open on Sundays.
