How to Remove the Hub on a 1995 Jeep Cherokee

    • 1). Locate the drive nut in the center of the wheel. There is a cotter pin securing it. Remove the cotter pin with a pair of needle-nose pliers, then loosen the drive nut with a breaker bar and socket. You will not be able to loosen this nut once the wheels are off the ground so if you are replacing both hubs, make sure to loosen both drive nuts.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench but do not remove them yet. Raise the front of the Jeep off the ground with a jack and support it with a set of jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and then pull the wheels off the Jeep.

    • 3). Locate the two mounting bolts on the rear of the brake caliper. Remove them with a socket and ratchet then pull the caliper off the rotor. Hang the caliper from the upper suspension with a piece of string or piece of wire. Do not let it hang on the rubber brake hose or damage will occur.

    • 4). Slide the brake rotor off the wheel studs and set it aside. Remove the drive nut from the end of the hub with a socket and ratchet. Set the nut aside for use later.

    • 5). Locate the three 12-point bolts that retain the hub from the rear of the steering knuckle. Remove the bolts with a socket and ratchet, setting then aside for use during reassembly. Pull the hub straight out of the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft. You may need to use a hammer and cold chisel around the seam between the hub and knuckle to get it started if it has rusted in place.
