What Is the Healthiest Cook Stove for a Home?
- UC-Berkeley researchers working in Darfur began using inexpensive sheet metal to construct a highly efficient cook stove relying on 50 to 75 percent less wood than ordinary cook stoves. Using less energy also means reducing the risk of open flame air pollution. This is the healthiest alternative to traditional cook stoves.

A good alternative to burning coal for fuel is using biomass briquettes made from various raw materials such as ground nut shells, husks or hay. Briquettes also have the potential of using quarantined or diseased wood which would cut down on deforestation. - Other types of healthy cook stoves are Improved Lorena or ONIL stoves, or the Kenya Ceramic Jiko (KCJ). The Improved Lorena stove is from Central America and made from metal, brick and has a chimney bringing smoke outside. The ONIL stove saves 60 to 70 percent fuel consumption and reduces 99 percent of smoke emission in the home. Using charcoal as its fuel, the KCJ reduces fossil fuels by 30 to 50 percent and reduces emissions for better health.
