Tiwanaku was a ceremonial site comprising various important areas.

In addition to the vast Kalasaya compound, seen here from a sunken courtyard, there is the Gate of the Sun, Acapana Pyramid, a semi-subterranean temple and the Puma Punku, the Gateway of the Puma, compound across the railroad tracks from Tiwanaku.
In the Kalasaya compound there are rooms cut from stone with stone faces carved into the walls.
