Museums in Huancavelica

Very few foreign tourists make it to Huancavelica – in fact, quite a few have probably never even heard of it. But despite being one of the poorest cities in Peru, Huancavelica is a picturesque place with no pressing security concerns despite the poverty level.

Like the wider Huancavelica Region (located in south-central Peru, see map), the city of Huancavelica has a rich history both in terms of pre-Columbian cultures and events during and after the Spanish conquest of Peru. Unfortunately, and despite the rich history, museums in the city and the region are few and far between.

Museo Regional “Daniel Hernández Morillo”

The Museo Regional “Daniel Hernández Morillo” is divided into two exhibition halls, the first focused on the anthropology and archaeology of the region, and the second on local popular art. Archaeological exhibits include diagrams and artifacts from the nearby Incahuasi archaeological site, and a recreation of a pre-Columbian burial. Modern cultural items in the popular art exhibit include ceramics, handicrafts and other pieces related to the folklore of the Huancavelica area.

Museo Arqueológico “Samuel Humberto Espinoza Lozano”

The Museo Arqueológico in Huaytará was built almost entirely around donations from Peruvian researcher and archaeologist Samuel Humberto Espinoza. The collection contains pre-Columbian artifacts found in the region, including funerary bundles, human skulls (some trepanned), ceramics, weapons and tools. There are also photos of archaeological sites in the Huancavelica Region.
