Does ADHD Cognitive Therapy Work?

ADHD cognitive therapy works on a very simple principle.
The way we think affects all our actions.
If we manage to change damaging thought processes which can lead to depression, anxiety, ADHD or other behavior problems, then our problems can be solved.
Great theory but does ADHD cognitive therapy actually work with children? As part of a Ph.
D thesis, a very creative web-based interaction game called 'Animal Agentz' was developed at the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.
There are different animal characters who actually teach the children coping skills to deal with visiting the dentist, learning how to breathe deeply to relax or preparing for an exam.
This game can also be used in ADHD situations where the child may be having a temper tantrum in the shopping mall or refusing to eat at mealtimes or other bad behavior.
The animal characters teach the kids coping skills and that is going to stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
That is the same principle which ADHD behavior therapy follows.
Let me give you an example.
One of the animal characters, the fish, teaches breathing skills.
Children learn to imitate him and start breathing correctly and relaxing.
Now if your ADHD child is going berserk in the street with a temper tantrum, there is no point in shouting, threatening or even telling him to relax.
But if the child has been through the Animal Agentz learning experience and you remind him of the fish, he will start breathing deeply and begin to calm down.
This is the research version of the game and I am not sure if it is available commercially yet or even if it has the same name.
I do know that doctors from the American Academy of Paediatrics were very enthusiastic about it as were doctors from the British Medical Association.
ADHD cognitive therapy is also sometimes referred to as ADHD behavior therapy and uses the same methods.
Most experts agree that this combination of behavioural therapy plus some medication can go a long way to solving many ADHD related problems.
The question of which medication is a vexed one and many parents are frightened about the side effects of psychostimulants.
That is why they are turning to ADHD homeopathic remedies which are not only effective but safe and much easier on your wallet.
There is one company who has developed with trained homeopaths an ADHD remedy which calms and soothes and will reduce hyperactivity.
This also provides a perfect combination with a complementary treatment such as ADHD cognitive therapy.
