1Enroll in a driver's education training class.

Study the driver's training manual for the written or online permit test. Upon completion, show proof of passing the test.

Pass an eye test at Department of Motor Vehicles.

Take a knowledge test. The knowledge test is a short test about the rules of the road. The process varies with each state.

Bring necessary documentation with you to Department of Motor Vehicles. Bring your original birth certificate, Social Security card, and proof of where you live.

Bring a licensed driver with you who is over 21 years of age. Wear your seat belts. Children under the age of 3 must be in approved car safety seats. You can only drive from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
