How to Load Tapes Onto Your iPod

    • 1). Download and install Audacity. Audacity is a powerful free program for audio editing. You will need it to import your music. It comes in versions for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux.

    • 2). Connect your tape player. You can use any kind of tape player, be it a larger boom box or a small portable tape player. Connect your line jack from the "out" socket on the tape player (where the headphone jack would go) to the "in" socket on your computer (where a microphone would get plugged in).

    • 3). Open Audacity and create a new project. Press the record button, then press the play button on your tape player. Press the stop button when you are done recording the song or album.

    • 4). Go the "Export As" open in the Audacity file menu. Select the file format that you like best. WAV and AIFF formats have the advantage of almost perfect reproduction of the original audio, while MP3 has the advantage of being the preferred format of file trading, as well as taking up less space.

    • 5). Import the music to your iTunes. Find the music files on your hard drive. Select all of them, then right click and select the option to open your files with iTunes. This will import them into your iTunes library.

    • 6). Add information to the tracks. Go through each track, labeling it (at the very least) with an artist, album, and song name. If the tracks are supposed to play in a specific order, make sure to note what track number each song is in the appropriate field.

    • 7). Connect your iPod to your computer and wait for iTunes to recognize the device. Click the icon representing your iPod in the field on the left. Click the "Sync" button. This will synchronize your iPod and iTunes adding any music that you have added to your iTunes library onto your iPod.
