What to do in Cordoba and Puertollano
Cordoba has a great mosque ('Mezquita') that was once the largest in Europe. Its old town is more reminiscent of a seaside town than a major city.
If you like Gazpacho, try the local 'salmorejo', which is similar but a little thicker (it is made with more bread) and topped with a sprinkling of egg and ham.

Puertollano is an industrial town that rarely attracts tourists. Though it does have a 14th century chapel (Ermita de la Soledad), you might want to stay in Cordoba rather than Puertollano.
