- 1). Draw a layout of your home, being sure to include each room that you intend to carpet. Some computer programs will allow you to do this easily, otherwise use a pencil and paper.
- 2). Measure the length and width of each room that you intend to carpet. Round up each measurement to the nearest 1/2 foot. Multiply the width times the length in feet for each room. Mark down the sums, then total them together.
- 3). Add 10 percent to the total, since laying carpet can be complicated. Pile carpet for example, may need to be laid so that the pile all faces the same way. Other times, the shape of a room may make it difficult to efficiently place the carpet's seams. By allowing for these issues in advance, you will ensure that you have enough carpet on hand if a problem arises.
- 4). Divide the total number by nine, since most carpet is sold by the square yard. That final number will be the total number of square yards of carpet you need.
