How to Release a Car From Park
- 1). Locate the parking break. This should be either next to the driver's seat, on the steering column, or an engaged petal to the left of the gas and brake pedals. Also see if the gear stick is operated from the parking break. Some vehicles have a separate "brake-release," which can be a separate shift stick or a pull.
- 2). Pull the "brake-release" and push firmly down on the brake pedal, if the parking brake is disengaged independently from the gear stick.
- 3). Engage the clutch, if the vehicle is standard. While the clutch is engaged, you should be able to shift the gear stick out of park into a driving gear.
- 4). Slide the gear stick out of park on an automatic vehicle, with your foot on the brake. Keep your foot down firmly on the brake pedal, to prevent it from moving forward or backward out of control. Shift the car into driving gear.
