How to Fix Dark Photos

    • 1). Open the image in a photo editor like Adobe Photoshop or the free program Paint.net. You can download Paint.net from the link in Resource.

    • 2). Click the "Adjustments" menu at the top of the program. Photo-editing programs like Photoshop and Paint.net typically use these same controls, though some photo editors have more options than others.

    • 3). Choose the "Levels" option from the drop-down menu that appears. A new window will open. Drag the window to an area of the screen where you can see both the new window and the photograph itself.

    • 4). Select the "Auto" button. The program will adjust the levels of the photograph automatically. This should lighten the picture somewhat, and if only minor changes are needed, it may fix it completely.

    • 5). Adjust the slider arrows shown along the two bars in the window. As you move each slider, the picture will change. Watch the picture and keep adjusting it until the picture appears light enough. If you make a mistake and want to start over, click the "Reset" button. Often only a few adjustments will fix the photograph.
