Bipolar Disorder Prevention

    Prevention

    • People with bipolar disorder cannot prevent the onset of this mental illness. It often, but not always, has a genetic component and usually occurs before middle age. The condition can continue for years, but medications and other methods of management help limit the symptoms and prevent its worsening.

    Medications

    • Prescription medications can help moderate the symptoms of bipolar disorder in some patients. Such medications include antidepressants or specialized medications that control the symptoms of mania. Examples are lithium, Depakote or Tegretol. Finding the right medication or balance of medications and dosage is essential. Long-term treatment is usually required.

    Early Treatment

    • Recognizing the onset of a manic or depressive episode can help the bipolar patient to take steps to stabilize the condition, preventing the emotions and symptoms from reaching the extremes. Whether it is medication or a lifestyle change, beginning treatment quickly can help moderate the symptoms.

    Physical Management

    • It is important that a bipolar patient maintain a balanced lifestyle that avoids the extremes brought on by alcohol, caffeine and illicit drugs. Good nutrition and healthy exercise are important as is maintaining good sleep habits.

    Stress Reduction

    • Stress can trigger a manic or depressive episode, so it is vital that a bipolar patient learn stress reduction methods, such as yoga, to manage stress and avoid situations known to trigger mood swings.

    Group Support

    • The support of family and friends can help a bipolar person in the effort to control the bipolar episodes. Group therapy can be very helpful when patients are able to share their concerns and means of dealing with the condition.

    Alternative Treatments

    • Some bipolar patients choose additional means to help them deal with their condition. Among these alternatives are vitamins and herbs, hobbies, sports or spiritual activities such as meditation and prayer. In the case of over-the-counter medications or herbals, however, the physician should be notified since such treatments may affect prescribed medications.
