How to Cut Tile for a Shower Drain

    • 1). Place new tile over the drain opening positioned as the tile will be when installed. Mark the dimensions for the drain and the circle onto the tiles to be cut.

    • 2). Mark the circle for the drain at the proper diameter with a marker if you are installing a new drain into an existing tile floor.

    • 3). Clamp the tile to a stable surface with the section to be cut positioned over an edge. Skip this step for previously installed tile.

    • 4). Pull the angle grinder or rotary tool with dry-cutting, diamond cutting disc attached over the marks with slight downward pressure to score the surface of the tile. Repeat the process an additional two or three times until the tile is cut approximately halfway through.

    • 5). Tap the tile along the edge you want to remove with a rubber mallet to break off the unneeded section of tile. Do not hammer at the tile or you may shatter the whole piece of tile.

    • 6). Drag the angle grinder or rotary tool over the scored marks repeatedly until the tile is cut clean through for previously installed tile.
