Classical buffs and history experts can head to eastern Germany for concertos in the capital, Berlin. Home of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the State Opera of Berlin has had a permanent residence “under the Linden trees” since 1832. Take in an opera and tour Berlin, then move on to historic Dresden. In this East German city, classical lovers will relish the Spring Wagner Opera Festival and the stunning Semper Opera House. Finally, head to Leipzig where Johann Sebastian Bach lived for almost 30 years. The city hosts music festivals dedicated to the composer. - From the Glockspiel to Staatsoper, Munich has music at every turn.munich image by weim from Fotolia.com
For accessible opera, Munich is a great option. Each year starting at the end of June, the city puts on a festival at the Staatsoper and in the city’s pristine parks and gardens. Tourists can book tickets for opera performances online at the Muenchner Operfestspiele, while the Opera For All choice is always free. Munich is a fantastic music tour destination because of its central location (easy transit to Nuremburg, Munich and Frankfurt airports) and its wide range of available accommodation (from a vibrant hosteling culture to posh five-star hotels). - Cologne's striking skyline.Cologne I image by Dreadlock from Fotolia.com
In far West Germany, check out the Rheinkultur Festival held each year in Bonn the last week of June. Bonn is Germany’s former capital, but offers top-notch quality when it comes to music--as it is the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and nearby Cologne is an indie music destination. Rheinkultur is a free festival featuring up-and-coming pop and rock acts such as Juliette Lewis and Alexisonfire. Beginning in September, Bonn also hosts the Beethoven Festival, where classical fans can expect quality soloists and orchestras from all over the world. It is also possible to tour the Rhein River from Bonn’s picturesque location in the center of North-Rhein Westphalia. Tourists are within easy reach of Cologne, Dusseldorf and even Paris and Amsterdam, which makes Bonn an ideal destination for music fans.
