Tourist Information on Maricopa, Arizona

    History

    • Throughout the 1800s, Maricopa served as a stop on the Butterfield OVerland Mail Route, which had a large role in developing the southwest. The Maricopa Chamber of Commerce also states that the town was a gold rush boom town, starting in 1879. Later, Maricopa became a famous railroad junction where travelers could board trains for Phoenix and Tempe, Ariz.

    Tourist Information and Transportation

    • According to the Chamber of Commerce, Maricopa has a population of more than 38,000 and is located just south of Phoenix and northwest of Tempe. The town is 25 miles just from the Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. The MarciopaXPRESS is a connector bus line that runs to the Phoenix metro-plex, with service to downtown Phoenix and Tempe. The bus runs during rush hour in the morning and afternoon, so tourists arriving at that time in Phoenix could take the bus to Maricopa for $3 one-way for adults (as of 2010), according to the City of Maricopa.

The city offers local Mexican and southwestern restaurants, such as The Silver Spur Grill at the Rancho El Dorado Golf Course, which serves a variety of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Raceway Bar and Grill offers Chicago-style pizza, Italian, Mexican and American dishes. The Native New Yorker Restaurant offers fries, hot dogs, burgers and pizza.

    Things to Do in Maricopa

    • Maricopa offers tourists many options for entertainment. Arizona's 7th ranked golf course, Southern Dunes Golf Club. Green fees range from $29 to $129 depending on the season. Summer is the least expensive, while January to April is the most expensive. Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino Resort is another must-see in Maricopa. Guests can enjoy a 40,000 square foot casino, live entertainment and restaurants. At the Ak-Chin Indian Eco Museum, tourists can learn about the culture of the Ak-Chin Him-Dak Indian tribe through their art, crafts and photographs.
