How to Visit Madurodam in the Hague in The Netherlands

    • 1). Walk or ride over to Madurodam to see the tiny city located midway between downtown The Hague and the seaside Hague resort area of Scheveningen. It is easily accessible by the wonderful public transportation system available in The Hague and is easy to get to by tram, bus or bicycle. There is also paid parking available for visitors arriving by car and you can always walk there if you are close enough. The Hague is a very pedestrian-friendly city. This is an outdoor attraction, so plan to go on a clear day.

    • 2). Pay your admission fee. Be sure to get your free guidebook that explains where you are and what you are looking at in each area. Then, follow the map around the grounds of Madurodam. Each building or structure is easily identified with a little map. This experience is a step back to innocence and childhood, while at the same time a technical feat and artistic creation that any adult will appreciate. Just let yourself relax and enjoy the wonder of it. Take your time wandering through the grounds, then go back and see your favorite things again. Instead of a stroll through a garden of flowers, this is a pleasant walk through a miniatures garden. Madurodam is wheelchair accessible for visitors who need to wander the grounds with a wheelchair.

    • 3). Follow the pedestrian paths around the miniature city and admire each architectural miniature. Be sure to bring a camera because Madurodam is full of wonderful photo opportunities. Take photos of each person next to their favorite features so you can show the scale between the buildings and a real person. This is Holland in miniature and gives you a great overview of the architectural diversity the country is rich with. Visiting Madurodam is like Gulliver being let loose in Lilliput and the detail is amazing.

    • 4). Look at all the working and moving features of the little city, like the turning windmills, moving canal boats and taxiing airplanes. Watch the miniature working trains. Check out the miniature landscaping and see if you can spot a groundskeeper working on any buildings for a humorous photo opportunity.

    • 5). Make sure you check to see if there are any special events occurring at Madurodam, like light shows and other interesting family-friendly things to see in the exhibition hall. These change periodically. Current special events, admission fees, specific directions and some of their history is listed on the website, along with a few photos to intrigue you and make you want to go to Madurodam to see all the features in person. It is well worth more than one visit.
