How to Check Skylights
- 1). Set up the ladder under the skylight. Make sure the ladder is opened fully under the skylight.
- 2). Climb up and look for signs of water leaks. Water stains tend to be yellow in color and begin from the top of the skylight down. If you notice any yellow water stains no matter how faint it is, it's a sign your skylight is leaking. Repair the skylight by applying a bead of silicone caulking with the caulking gun around the glass of the skylight.
- 3). Enter your attic, if your skylight uses a tub to bring in the light. Use the flashlight to inspect the tubing and look for signs of moisture or water stains around the drywall under the skylight. If you notice any stains then your skylight is likely leaking. Apply a bead of caulking around the seams of the tubing and the skylight.
- 4). Climb onto the roof and apply a thin layer of roofing cement around the skylight. Use the spatula to apply roofing cement around the skylight. Using the roofing cement with the silicone caulking inside will ensure your skylight will not leak. Inspect your skylight over the next month to make sure the leak has stopped. If your skylight is still leaking then you must contact a professional to replace the skylight.
