How To: Paint Like A Professional Painter Decorator

Step One :: Choose The Right Type of Paint

The first step to ensuring the perfect finish is selecting the correct type of paint for the job. There are some paints that are more commonly used, such as latex based (water based) paints. Water-based paints can be a good choice as they dry quickly and they do not contain the same harmful fumes found in other types of paint. These paints are also less likely to fade, yellow or allow moisture to penetrate. That may sound good, but oil based paints, called alkyd paint, are often a better choice for longevity. Unless you have good experience with DIY painting and decorating then oil-based paints are best left to the professionals, they can be much harder to apply correctly.

Step Two :: Pick the Right Paint Finish

Most types of paint are sold in several finishes. These include flat/matte (no shine), eggshell or satin, semi gloss, and high gloss (lots of shine.) Matte paints are more likely to be affected by mildew as the finish has more pores than a semi gloss or high gloss paint. However, matte paints conceal imperfections better than higher glosses as they reflect far less light. Satin paints are a very popular choice because or their good durability, combined with a soft finish that exudes warmth and class.

Step Three :: Paint Second, Clean First

Before you begin to paint the room, be sure that you have fully prepared the working area. You should remove anything that can be removed, such as outlet covers. Then, wash the walls thoroughly to remove any type of dust or debris. The next step is tape off the room, making sure you cover any surface that you do not wish to paint. If there are any holes, use a patching compound or filler to repair them. Prime the surface if needed. The cleaning process is the most often skipped step in the painting and decorating business, however it is the step that gives you that ultra professional look.

Step Four :: Use the Correct Tools to Apply Paints Properly and Evenly

When you finally come to applying the paint, make sure you use the right tools for the job. You will need to use brushes, paint rollers, or even sprayers along with other tools to get the job done. To get a truly professional finish be sure that you're methodical, patient and apply even coats. Trim work should be done prior to the application of paint with a roller.

These painting tips can help you to paint like a professional painter decorator with each project you undertake. Invest some extra time in the project and your finished walls will look amazing.
