Hungary's third largest city--Miskolc--sits at the foot of the Bükk Mountains. The historic region is home to the 15th-century Avas Church, which sits atop Mt. Avas, and its viewing tower provides panoramic views of the city. The famous thermal baths in the cave system of nearby Miskolctapolca are enormously popular, and several resorts populate the outlying mountain areas. The city itself offers museums, authentic eateries, a theater and an array of accommodation options for visiting guests. - The Hotel Pannonia is nestled in the heart of Miskolc's historic downtown area. Thirty-four guest rooms and seven suites are available, many of which offer views of the pedestrian precinct below. Hardwood floors and tile bathrooms complement each room, while suites are equipped with American-style kitchens. The Big Ben Cafe serves regional Hungarian dishes in the dining rooms or street-front under the covered terrace. Hungary's first stone-built theater, the Miskolc National Theatre, is located a two-minute walk from the hotel. It is home to the oldest theater company in the country and hosts plays and special events including the International Opera Festival of Miskolc. Also nearby is the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity. This 18th-century church is home to 88 icons that depict the life of Jesus, as well as the icon of the Black Madonna of Kazan, which was presented to the church by Catherine the Great. The adjacent Hungarian Orthodox Museum is accessible from the church courtyard.
