How to Glue Foam Insulation to Basement Walls

    • 1). Measure the height and width of the basement walls you'll cover with foam insulation panels. Sketch a diagram of the walls on a piece of paper, and use it and the measurements to estimate the number of panels you'll need.

    • 2). Place a foam insulation panel against the corner of one wall. Mark the panel's outside edge on the wall with a pencil. If the panel needs to be trimmed to fit in the space, then score it with a utility knife, and snap off the excess portion of the panel.

    • 3). Put a tube of construction adhesive in a caulking gun, and cut off enough of the tube's tip so that the tip can create a one-half to three-quarter-inch wide bead of adhesive. Apply adhesive on the wall in an S-shaped pattern.

    • 4). Place the panel on the adhesive-covered wall, and press the panel firmly until it doesn't shift.

    • 5). Glue other foam insulation panels to the basement walls using the same procedure you used to attach the first foam insulation panel to a wall.

    • 6). Cover the seams between the panels with vinyl tape. The tape prevents air leakage between the panels.
