Once a year, the undead emerge to roam the streets of downtown Memphis. No, this doesn't happen on Halloween. It happens each spring at the Memphis Zombie Massacre when hundreds of zombies take to the streets and devour willing victims along the way. You will also see singing zombies, dancing zombies, and sometimes even an Elvis zombie.
Intrigued? Here's everything you need to know about the Memphis Zombie Massacre.
Who Are the Zombies?
The zombies are regular folks like you and me who want to be a part of this fun event. Zombies include the young and the old, male and female, black and white. In other words, anyone can be a zombie--all you have to do is show up.
How Does It Work?
On the day of the Massacre, zombies gather at the corner of South Main and G.E. Patterson at 6:30 p.m. to begin roaming the streets. Anyone who needs makeup assistance can go to the grassy lot near Front Street and G.E. Patterson as early as 4:00 p.m. but participants are "zombified" on a first-come, first-served basis. For this reason, it is recommended that you come already zombified.
At 6:30 p.m., the zombies will begin their walk down South Main to Beale before invading Beale Street en masse.
Anyone who wants to be devoured by a zombie can indicate that by wearing a clearly visible duct tape X on their clothing. Zombies will then devour these victims by dousing them in fake blood and gore.
Anyone not marked with a duct tape X does will not be "attacked."
How Do I Zombify Myself?
Check out this zombie costume and makeup tutorial and be sure to view photos from previous Massacres.
Is It Scary For Kids?
It really depends upon the child. There are babies and children who participate in the Zombie Massacre each year and are fine. There are some children, though, who would most likely be frightened by the spectacle. When in doubt, leave the kiddos at home.
Is This Safe or Do Things Get Out of Hand?
The Memphis Zombie Massacre is a very well-run event and participants tend to follow the rules. These rules, as per the MZM website are:

The Memphis Zombie Massacre is a very well-run event and participants tend to follow the rules. These rules, as per the MZM website are:
- No harassing or touching or spraying gore at bystanders who are not clearly marked to be part of the walk.
- No scaring children who clearly aren't into it.
- No messing with property that isn't yours. This means cars, store fronts, news stands, etc. Don't damage stuff that's not yours. And please don't litter. Sure, we're going to leave a trail of blood and gore but let's not add trash to the mix.
- No blocking traffic. This is in some ways inevitable, but in the past we have been able to manage ourselves and abide, more or less, by the whims of the crosswalk lights, and everything has turned out swimmingly.
- No boozin' it up during the walk. We know people do it anyway, but please be judicious and don't get too crazed.
- No entering galleries or shops while all gored up.
- Don't break the law.
