Marty Markowitz at a Glance:

Marty Markowitz was elected as Brooklyn Borough President in 2001.

A native Brooklynite, Markowitz doesn't hide his borough pride. In 2002, he was responsible for the installation of the 5-feet high by 8-feet wide greetings posted on major entry points into Brooklyn, including the infamous "Leaving Brooklyn-Fuhgeddaboudit!" sign.

Marty Markowitz, the Early Years:
  • 1962: Markowitz graduates from Wingate High School in Crown Heights, the neighborhood in which he was born and raised.
  • 1970: Receives a B.A. in Political Science from Brooklyn College.
  • 1971: Organizes what is known today as Brooklyn Housing and Family Services, a tenants' advocacy organization.
  • 1979: Elected to the New York State Senate, where he served 11 consecutive terms.
  • 1999: Marries his wife, Jamie.

Marty Markowitz Now:
  • 2001: Elected Brookyn Borough President.
  • 2002: Supports moving the NBA Nets to an arena in Downtown Brooklyn.
  • 2004: Creates the Brooklyn Center on Health Disparities.
  • 2004: Launches the Neighborhood Beautification Fund.
  • 2005: Re-elected to another term as Brooklyn Borough President.
