How to update your home on a small budget

    • 1). Start by repainting your desired rooms with neutral colors. Light shades of green, taupe, gray or even different variations of white alongside painting trim and doors a bright white can give any room a clean, updated look and feeling of space. Going to your local home improvement store, hardware or grocery store and renting a professional steam cleaner and giving your existing carpets a good cleaning can also update the look of your home.

    • 2). Kitchens and bathrooms are also great rooms to focus on updating. Besides paint, try updating cabinets pulls/knobs by spray painting old hardware white, black, metallic, or if the budget allows, replace the hardware altogether with something like brushed nickel, which is very popular right now.

    • 3). There are also many inexpensive brands of kitchen and bathroom faucets that can quickly change the look in those rooms. The same goes for updating the light fixtures in a kitchen or bathroom. Many home improvement stores have their own brand of fixtures that are trendy and inexpensive.

    • 4). Adding ceiling fans to bedrooms and family/great rooms also add instant value to your home. Just make sure they are simple, and preferably without a light fixture on them if you are trying to sell your home. Anything too fancy may not appeal to everyone.

    • 5). Finally, installing inexpensive vinyl tiles, which by the way can be installed directly over old tile if need be, is also a cheap way to update a kitchen or bath. You can now even find vinyl tiles that look like marble, stone, ceramic or even wood laminate. The most inexperienced do-it-yourselfer can to this.
