- 1). Spray paint the outline of the sidewalk onto the ground.
- 2). Dig a trench inside the lines. Determine the depth of the trench by how your local building codes require you to construct the slab.
- 3). Flatten the soil inside the trench with a rake and tamp it down to compact it.
- 4). Hammer wooden stakes into the ground every 3 feet around the edge of the trench. Leave at least 4 inches of the stakes above ground so you can nail the 2-by-4 boards to them.
- 5). Measure and cut the 2-by-4 boards so that they are long enough to meet in the middle of a stake, and don't end in the gap between two stakes.
- 6). Place the 2-by-4 boards along the edge of the trench and nail them to the wooden stakes.
