ADHD - Making Short and Long Term Friendships May Prove Difficult For Those With ADHD

For most of us the friendships we made early in life have served us well through the years.
We can always call on those old friends for advice when the situation arises.
But imagine if there was no one to call or for that matter there were very few people that wanted to talk to you simply because your personality seemed overbearing, rude, self centered, impulsive, or just flat out strange.
Welcome to the world that many of those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder reside in.
ADHD symptoms can make it very difficult for anyone with attention deficit disorder to make and maintain friendships.
Their symptoms make simple communication skills such as picking up on communication cues and translating nonverbal cues into appropriate action almost impossible.
This will eventually to lead them to shy away from social interaction, in favor of a safer life consisting of solitude and isolationism.
Another set of social skill problems often seen in ADHD individuals of all ages is the failure to see the need to nurture relationships and keep them growing and going.
They may also forget about friends needs leading potential friends to believe they are simple too self centered to have a two way conversation.
Individuals with ADHD may not feel the need to text or call their friends, send a friendly email just to say hello and catch up on old times, remember birthdays and other important dates, or remember to console them after a personal emotional disaster.
This lack of caring may leave this potential or soon to be ex friend alienated and hurt making it next to impossible for the friendship to move forward in a positive way.
No time for you! Some individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, especially those who are unusually hyperactive or restless, may feel the need to interrupt conversations and situations where they're not invited by constantly interrupting others, or behaving in a hostile, arrogant fashion.
Most of us would agree that this type of pushy behavior not only makes people mad but labels the pushy person as rude and inconsiderate.

One of the types of treatment most often suggested for dealing with both the person upset that social shortcomings deliver and learning strategies to better fit in to societal norms is that of cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT.
CBT is a form of treatment that combines elements of both behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy.
Together, these two forms of treatment work to help the ADHD individual make positive social and personal changes by altering the way they think and act using an intricate web of conditioning and association.
In other words a CBT professional will use these four steps: First explore the situation or situations where problem ADHD behavior exists, develops a strategy for better handling it, work with the ADHD individual to implements that strategy successfully, and last but not least assess the results and makes the appropriate adjustments to achieve the intended behavioral modifications.
