Marketing on Twitter

Marketing on twitter requires a great deal of subtlety to be effective.
If you keep on putting obvious sales links in your tweets you will start to get un-follows or even blocked, twitter can suspend your account if you have to may blocks due to irregularities (although it is worth noting at this today vie been offered ten "free reports" and a "how to get 15000 followers In a week system") .
So people do try the hard sell on Twitter but it just comes over as spamming.
We have to build relationships on twitter, you need to engage someone, interact with them and give them so kind of value or reason to read your tweets.
There are a number of ways we can use twitter for our marketing needs.
  •  Research
  •  Helping fellow tweeters
  •  Product Promotion
Do you notice that none of the options above actually involve the "buy/get my fantastic report, diet book etc " here approach.
We have to be subtle.
Research This part is easy I did it in the writing of this report.
I asked my followers 1500 at the time of writing which twitter applications they liked the best.
I've had 35 replies to just one tweet over the last few hours.
It's a huge resource for opinions and by asking for advice I have indirectly told them about my report (good eh!!).
I could then feedback the results of my question for anyone whose interested.
maybe link to my blog.
That's the direct method we can also follow others tweets in the tweet stream, this will tell us what issues people are having for instance if some needs to generate more traffic to a website or needs a apple pie recipe.
Depending on your niche this could be a great opportunity to find out product or service opportunities in real time.
You can either act on this data or keep it for further research.
Helping fellow tweeters Do you want to portray yourself as an expert in your niche? The best subtle way to do this is giving out free advice.
If someone has a problem which you can solve freely, do it, you will gain there trust and they will follow your tweets in the future.
Lets say someone has tweeted "I can't get traffic to my blog".
First build some rap pour "I've been there when I first set up my blog/website I had some real issues getting it noticed " Then make a few suggestions for instance " Hi there ive got a number of things you can try to get some free traffic try to create more back links using Facebook, CPC, Squidoo etc".
If they've not tried your suggestions they will be thankful.
If you don't know an answer to a question go onto Google and research it ...
it could take minutes and they've captured a possible visitor/customer in the future.
Another way you can start to help someone is to tell a story.
For our example it could be "Hi all I noticed axe had a problem with website traffic ive just been for a walk and remembered a great video that helped me, here's the link.
" If they want your advice they will visit the video either on You Tube for instance or embedded in your own website which could have a product or affiliate links around it.
Just as a side note there is software available that actually embeds links into videos (mental note must get an affiliate link for one of these!)  Handled well this technique is very effective.
Although I must stress give free advice first to gain a some respect then point them to the product you are promoting.
Product Promotions The first part of this process is similar to direct research.
I tell my followers that I have been working all day to complete a report/eBook whatever and im tired and off to bed.
The next day I might ask for some suggestions on the title as "I just can't think".
You've now started to introduce the product subject and hopefully spark some interest.
Then you could tweet on the different name ideas and how great xxx was.
All the time you are talking about the product.
Now we could start talking about how thankful your are to the people who help you create the product, then when you think you will finish it etc.
Can you see the power of this approach you get people involved and on your side if done correctly? Lastly you could offer those who helped a free preview of the product (depending what it is of course) and maybe even use twitter to collect some testimonials.
Within this product or the location you send them to can be all sorts of affiliate links or other products you have, the sales funnel is there just carried out with a more subtle touch.
All of these techniques need some carefully thought put posts.
Your reputation is key to earning respect there are a number of things to think about before hitting the send button.
  • Is this post related to my niche
  • Am I providing good content or advice
  • If its personal does it fit my overall strategy.
  • Do I sound pushy or conversational
You don't have to be a copywriter just read them and think would I read this post if it was sent to me.
