How to Make a Scale Drawing of a Fighter Plane

    • 1). Measure the length of the fighter plane you have chosen, just as it pictured in the reference guide you are using for this activity. A photograph will offer realistic dimensions from the pictured angle, therefore using a ruler will help you accurately scale this drawing.

    • 2). Turn the ruler 90 degrees to obtain the height dimensions of the plane as it shown in the picture. Record the results for both measurements, ensuring that you will use these dimensions confidently in your initial sketch.

    • 3). Place your ruler horizontally against the drawing paper and lightly sketch a line that equals the length measurement of the fighter plane. This basic line will help you accurately depict the width of this aircraft and you will want to angle this line exactly as the plane is in the picture.

    • 4). Use the ruler to create the basic height of the airplane at its largest point. Lightly sketch this line with a pencil to help guide you through creating the body with this vertical line. Place the ruler horizontally to create a third line to represent the length. Round out the edges of the front and rear of the plane as depicted in the picture you are using to complete the draft of the body.

    • 5). Measure each of the visible wings that attach to the sides and rear of the fighter plane. Write these measurements down so that you can apply these to the drawing.

    • 6). Position the ruler onto the paper and lightly sketch the wings as depicted in the reference picture. Carefully create each of these wings using the ruler until you are satisfied with the proportions of these parts.

    • 7). Check your rough draft of the airplane with the picture you are using as a reference guide. Make sure this basic body mimics the proportions of the fighter plane, ensuring a proper scale drawing.

    • 8). Move through each of the sections of the airplane and carefully create each of the small details. Older planes will likely show rivets on the outer body of the plane while newer fighter jets will showcase a smoother surface. Continue using light pencil strokes with each of the details.

    • 9). Trace over all of the intended pencil marks with an ink pen to create a bold and clean look in your drawing. Carefully move the pen over each of the lines, making sure you do not accidentally trace over any of the guidelines or smear the ink during this process. Let the ink dry then completely erase any remaining marks.
